Accountability at 4:30 am

Alarm goes off at 4:30 am.

I really want to go back to sleep. I look at my phone.

I read a text that says, “Let’s get big today!”

Can’t miss, got to get up and go.

We’ve talked a lot this year about knowing where you’re going and how to prioritize towards your destination. We’ve covered tools, systems, rhythms, and techniques to help you be productive.

But, there is one simple practice I have not emphasized enough. It is the one practice that has exponentially changed my life the most: Accountability.

Accountability through relationships

I have been working out three days a week for most of the year. I was challenged by two other Christian men to join them. I declined for a while thinking that I get the same results on my own. I was wrong.

It is easy to sign up for a gym and never show up. It is also easy to ignore a 4:30 a.m. alarm. I show up because I enjoy life with these men, I have big goals they are helping me reach, and they would give me a hard time if I didn’t show up. They have helped introduce consistency that I wouldn’t have found on my own.

That same accountability has spilled into my business. I love grand ideas and complicated systems. Having someone who knows my goals and walks alongside me keeps me focused on what matters most. I’ve been pulled back from wasting time, more often than I’d like to admit.

I have grown this year more than ever before in my faith, fitness, family, and business in large part because these men have poured into my life.

Not designed for isolation

Man was created to be in relationship with God and with others. As part of the fall, we became separated from God though Sin. This separation was only repaired by the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. He now invites us to be apart of his family.

Being a part of God’s family means we are not alone. God has sent the the Holy Spirit to be with us always and we have thousands upon thousands of brothers and sisters in Christ throughout the world.

Yet it’s easier than ever before to be isolated, distracted, and too busy for relationships. Endless notifications, easy access to screen time, and an overly full schedule leaves us empty and exhausted at the end of each day.

The antidote is drawing closer to God through intentional community with the body of Christ. I am talking about real relationships. Slowing down enough to share each others’ burdens. It’s having the margin to do daily life together.

Jesus said in Matthew 18:20, “Where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.”

Proverbs 27:17As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.”

Ecclesiastes 4:12Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.”

We need relationships if we are going to be who God designed us to be.

Combating isolation

The trend among Christian Entrepreneurs experiencing isolation, distraction, and busyness has been weighing deeply on my mind.

I am convinced more than ever that intimate long-term relationships centered in Christ is the best method to combat the isolation epidemic.

Final thoughts

As we approach the end of the year, I pray that God gives you rest and encouragement to finish well.

Hebrews 13: 20-21

Now may the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, equip you with everything good for doing his will, and may he work in us what is pleasing to him, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.”

May you be Anchored in Christ
